Student Drug Testing programs have been upheld by the US Supreme Court. They are designed to supplement existing school-based prevention interventions and have 4 primary goals:

1. deter students from substance use
2. identify students with substance use problems and refer them to appropriate counseling or treatment services
3. give students a credible means to resist peer pressure
4. have a spillover effect on other students as they observe and are influenced by the positive behavior of their peers.

Schools may choose to implement Mandatory Testing, Voluntary Testing, or both.   

Mandatory Testing.  Generally, only students who participate in school-sponsored athletics. extracurricular activities, or park on campus are subject to mandatory–random drug testing.  Positive test results can result in temporary suspensions up to terminations from participating in extracurricular activities.  

Voluntary Testing.    Designed to provide support and resources to parents/guardians of students that do not meet one of the mandatory testing requirements, therefore, generally a positive drug test for a participating student does not result in disciplinary, academic, or legal consequences.
